Verisign, Inc. is a publicly traded company based in Reston, Virginia operating a multitude of network infrastructure, including two of the web’s thirteen root nameservers. They are the authoritative registry for the .com, .net, and .name generic top-level domains and the .cc and .tv and the back-end systems for .jobs, .gov and .edu. Additionally, Verisign offers security services, including the DNS (Distributed Denial-of-Service)(DDoS) attack mitigation and cyber-security threat reporting.
Verisign used to own the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, infrastructure, but sold it to Symantec for $1.28 B in 2010.
The stock trades on the NASDAQ and is a component of the NASDAQ 100 and S&P 500. They have annual revenues in excess of $1.17 B and employee over 1,000 people.
