The US Department of State is most commonly referred to as the “State Department”. State Departments’ responsibility is US foreign policy and international relations to help stimulate diplomatic diplomacy. It was established in 1789 as the nations first executive department. State Department is responsible for advising the President, administering the US’s diplomatic missions, negotiating treaties and agreements with foreign nations while representing the United States at the UN (United Nations).
The US Department of State is responsible for:
Protecting and assisting US citizens living and traveling overseas
Assisting American businesses in foreign markets
Coordinating and providing support for international activities of other US agencies, official visits overseas and at home and other diplomatic efforts
Keeping the public informed about US foreign policy and relations with other countries and providing feedback from the public to administrative officials
Providing automobile registration for non-diplomatic staff vehicles and the vehicles of diplomats of foreign countries having diplomatic immunity in the US
State Departments has an annual budget of an estimated $52 Billion with 13,000 Foreign Service employees and 45,000 local employees making it one of the largest department of the US Government.
