US Securities and Exchange Commission, a.k.a. SEC is an independent agency of the United States government that was founded on June 6, 1934. It was created following the stock market crash of the 1920s in order to protect investors and the banking system. It holds the responsibilities of enforcing the federal securities laws, proposing securities rules and regulating the industry, which includes stock and option exchanges.
